Happiness and Joy Aren’t as Similar as People Believe

Are these considered different concepts?

Josh Rittenburg’s This I Believe story:  Tomorrow Will Be a Better Day

“If you walk in joy, happiness is close behind” this was said by Todd Stocker. Joy, the result of inner peace and satisfaction. Happiness, an external force or emotion and satisfaction. Stocker was trying to convey the fact that when you find something or yourself in a time in your life where you are proud and except yourself. Then so many memorable and happy moments will happen. Joy and happiness two things in life that aren’t as similar as you think they are.

Joy is a constant feeling no matter when these moments will be remembered as well as the feeling. These moments are usual things you do on your own or for yourself. In my own life I’ve felt joy when I laugh about something, receive good grades, forgive someone or do a good deed for someone in need. Forgiveness, the act of forgiving someone is like taking off a heavy backpack since you never realize how heavy the stress is until you resolve the issue. When you do something that creates joy you will usually make self-realizations and grateful for the decisions you’ve taken. Josh Rittenburg wrote a short story titled “Tomorrow Will Be A Better Day” he tells the story of when he overheard his dad worry about his future. Not what you would think about his future but, instead he worried about what the world would become in the future. He presents joy as how he has seen how the world has changed and he is positive that it will keep on progressively better. He realized that it was his generation could become and how he is able to be part of the change.

Happiness is hard to experience when you’re in a dark time or during a sad time. Usually this isn’t as memorable or remarkable as something joyful and is presented when someone or something causes it. For example in my life going to Disneyland, Cancun, New York, being around friends and family makes me happy. Even though I remember these moments they don’t leave as much of an impact rather than what I did during these events that creates joy. When I wean’t to New York it was a very happy memory but I am joyful that I was able to give some money to a helpful homeless man who would open the door every day when we would go to the mini market near the hotel.  It made me realize how lucky I was to be there and how fortunate I am compared to other people.

Happiness and Joy are both important and make it easier to fulfill your life with greatness and positivity when able to have both. These two are felt in moments we don’t even realize. Hopefully I’ve been able to answer your question of whether or not joy and happiness are the same. In case you’re still wondering, they aren’t.
